"Trumbull gets defensive in racing out to 6-2 start"

Connecticut Post Article (Jan 7):

Nearing the midway point of the season Trumbull has used a simple recipe of solid half-court defense mixed with a dash of 3-point shooting to get off to a 6-2 start.

The Eagles are holding opponents to a shade over 31 points per game, while averaging 4.5 3-pointers made on the other end of the court.

"I think we're the best defensive team in the league," fourth-year Eagles coach Steven Tobitsch said Wednesday, a day after his team dispatched Greenwich 51-30, the fifth team Trumbull has held to 30 points or less. "We pride ourselves on defense. Our goal is always to keep teams under 40 to give us a chance to win."

Trumbull, which doesn't have a senior on its roster, hones its man-to-man defense in aggressive practice sessions. Athletic 5-foot-9 junior forward Taisha Lima might set the tone for the Eagles defensively with her quick hands, which disrupt passing lanes.

The commitment to defense is important for Trumbull, which doesn't itself light up the FCIAC scoreboards, no better highlighted by a 24-21 defeat to one-loss Stamford on Dec. 16.

"I got some calls the next day that we set back the record books in basketball," said Tobitsch, who noted that Stamford scored 65 the next night in Danbury.

Offensively the Eagles don't exactly have a natural go-to player, although junior guard Kelly Coughlin is averaging 14 points, thanks in part to 16 3-pointers. The success for Trumbull is built on sharing the ball and finding the open player.

"We're not just a one-person team. We never say we have to get anybody this amount of shots," Tobitsch said. "Kids get excited that we're not built on one player. Everybody is allowed to shoot. So we're playing loose and having fun."

Sophomore guard Victoria Pfohl, after a slow start, has upped her production in the last five games to help facilitate the offense, while junior forward Kelly Metzger and freshman Alexa Pfohl and Erin Moore have also aided the Eagles' sometimes nine-man rotation.

The next two weeks should give a pretty good indication whether or not Trumbull will be fighting for a first-round FCIAC playoff home game or if it'll be scrapping like last year when it clinched the No. 7 seed on the last day of the season. Trumbull plays at Trinity Catholic tonight before hosting Ridgefield and Staples next week, followed by a Jan. 19 game at St. Joseph. The four teams are a combined 21-6 through Wednesday.

"Some people may have better players, but we pride ourselves on having the better team," Tobitsch said. "We have a lot of inexperience and it could come into play. We will be a better team in February. The games coming up will be a challenge, but with our great start, even with up and downs, we'll be in a good spot."

It should be a tough upcoming stretch for Trumbull, but on the flip side its opponents won't exactly relish playing against the Eagles' suffocating half-court defense.

"I think that now being in the league for four years now, the coaches now know how we play. I'd hope they think they know they're playing a tough team," Tobitsch said. "In high school you live on the team concept. As long as the girls buy into that, we'll be OK."
